This relief sculpture is a reference to the original quarrymen and others who paid with their lives during the industrial history of Darwen. The title of the work "Who pays the Quarryman"  misquotes "Who pays the ferryman" -across the Styx into the afterlife and refers to the link between the vast sums amassed by the mill owners and the fatalities of the workers.
