Wood Sculpture carvings Stone sculptor

"Arte et Labore"

The initial idea for this sculpture pulls together the regeneration of the area and the town and football club’s motto “Arte Et Lasbore”

The new Motorway, Housing and industrial regeneration of the area seemed to fit perfectly with the Towns motto “Arte Et Lasbore” (To work hard with skill)

''Thompson Dagnall undertook a commission called "Art et Labore" for Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council between 1997 and 1999. Tom won this £70k commission following an advertised design competition involving three other artists for this high profile scheme sited on the M65 junction at Earcroft in Blackburn. He captivated audiences in Blackburn from the word go with his creativity, passion and evidence of real craftsmanship at the interviews for the design commission.  Tom immediately translated this effect on audiences with similar effects with local schools, professionals and community groups during a lengthy two year project that involved detailed design and workshop consultation as well as major technical feasibility work on the foundations required and then subsequent carving on site.

The final unveiling of the completed stone sculpture was an impressive community fun day at the close of 1999 with many school children and residents, whom Tom had inspired, turning up to celebrate its success.

I have no hesitation in recommending him to you based upon his skills with stone carving, working with and inspiring different audiences and a real dedication to good quality and enduring environmental art.''
